After Care Program - Alliance for Progress Charter School

The Alliance for Progress Charter School (AFPCS) After School Enrichment Program operates from school dismissal to 6:00 p.m. and is run in partnership with Columbia North YMCA located on North Broad Street. The Adult Y staff coordinate enriching programming to help students develop friendships, build character, and experience new things.

The AFPCS After School Enrichment Program provides snacks and homework assistance.

There is no cost for the program. All YMCA School Age Programs are licensed by the PA Department of Human Services.

Student Support Programs

During the school year, the Student Support Department at Alliance for Progress Charter School provides services and support for students and their families that is designed to identify and address students who are experiencing problems that pose a barrier to their learning and academic success. The Student Support Department is composed of a group of specially trained school staff, and community agency liaisons, who work together to assist students and families by making in-school resources available, and providing information about community resources.

Parents are encouraged to be involved in the process. It is important to note that the Student Support Department does not provide treatment or implement disciplinary consequences. Referrals may be made to the program through the school counselor by staff, family members, community agencies, students or any other concerned persons. The Student Assistance Program (S.A.P) is one of the mechanisms that Alliance for Progress Charter School uses to connect students/their families to service providers for the purpose of receiving support with challenges related to mental health/wellness, such as depression, emotional disturbance, anxiety, etc.; substance abuse; sexual identity; behavioral deficits; and/or any challenges interfering with the student’s daily functioning.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act supports children/students, grades K-12 facing homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Act defines “homeless children and youth” as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.” For example: doubling up with family members, living in a shelter, living in a hotel, etc.” The purpose of this program is to remove barriers impacting the student(s) ability to continue attending/participating in school.

Social & emotional learning is taught to students from grades K to 8 throughout the school year. The purpose of social and emotional learning is to ensure that students learn 5 core competencies that research proves will help them be successful in all areas of their lives as they continue to mature into adulthood. The 5 core competencies are: “Self-Management” (managing emotions); “Self-Awareness” (being aware of your own feelings/emotions); “Social Awareness” (learning to be aware of the feelings & emotions of others by showing empathy); “Relationship Building” (learning to build strong positive relationships); and “Decision-Making” (learning how to make good decisions/managing impulse).

The Child Study Team consists of a group of Alliance for Progress Charter School staff that meet bi-weekly to review information submitted to the team (by teachers) regarding student behavioral deficits, academic deficits and social & emotional learning deficits. The purpose of the meetings is to implement processes/action steps to support & help the student improve academically, behaviorally, and/or socially & emotionally.
